Mesothelioma is a rare form of cancer which is caused by exposure to asbestos. Mesothelioma's latency period is 20-50 years after the person is initially exposed to asbestos making it difficult to diagnose and treat in its later stages.
Mesothelioma Types:
- Pleural mesothelioma: this cancer develops in the pleura, lining of the lung
- Peritoneal mesothelioma: this is located in the peritoneal membrane of the stomach
- Pericardial mesothelioma: forms in the pericardium lining of the heart
- Testicular mesothelioma: this is the rarest form of the cancer and is found in the testicles
- Benign mesothelioma: chest pain, shortness of breath, chronic cough
Mesothelioma Symptoms:
- Pleural mesothelioma: persistent cough, chest pains, shortness of breath, fatigue and interior lumps in the chest
- Peritoneal mesothelioma: abdominal pain, weight loss and nausea
- Pericardial mesothelioma: irregular heartbeats, palpitations, breathing difficulties, chest pain and night sweats
- Testicular mesothelioma: lumps on the testicles that may or may not be painful
